Some time ago Theerthi and I heard  an old man was sick,  one of the rich men in the village.  He didn’t normally even speak to me or to Theerthi (the other HA).  Nobody told us he was ill, nobody consulted us.  He had spent 700 rupees on treatment from the unqualified motorbike quack from Kotapatti,  having intravenous glucose. It didn’t help at all.   We heard that he was just lying in a room, feeling too weak to work.  We volunteered to go and call on him to see if we could help.  When we got there he would not speak to us, he just turned away.  We examined him, the way we have learned.  We noticed his eyes were very pale inside the lids, and the palms of his hands were also pale.  We thought he must be anaemic,  and we sat a long time with him, explaining what he should eat to get better.  He had been eating only rice before then.  We told him also he should eat food cooked in an iron pot.

After 2 weeks of eating as we advised he felt well enough to go to work in the field.  Then after a few months the same thing happened to his daughter.  That time he actually  came to my house to ask what to do.       Siva Sukthi,  Health Auxiliary in S Dadampatti.
