Tribal people have lived in the forests of Sittilingi area for millennia. They sustained themselves using the forest and subsistence agriculture. Today the modern world has encroached far into tribal life, causing insecurity, confusion and ill health.

They believed that practice of medicine is not just a matter of treating diseases, but is seeing individuals in the context of their communities to understand what is needed to improve health.
All this was to change in 1993, when, inspired by Mahatma Gandhi, Dr. Regi and Dr. Lalitha started Tribal Health Initiative (THI), with just a thatched hut for outpatient consulting.
Tribal Hospital is now 24 bedded with secondary care facilities.
