Rounds interrupted by a panicky and out of breath Peri Dhanam to tell me that there was a fire in the bamboo forest next to the hospital and it was spreading towards my house! Accompanied by Gee, many staff , nurses and patients’ attenders we went to battle the searing flames(forgive the exaggeration -my experience fighting fires being nil it sufficed to stand by and watch the others while handing out pails of water).
Team effort sweeping away the dried leave, pouring water sourced from my bathroom and isolating the burning areas proved sufficient. The fire burnt itself out soon. Just when we were heading back we heard something like gunshots, quite shaken we turned back to realize that the green moist bamboo was burning and was making the noise!
The extremely dry weather coupled with us not having made the fire line this year, with the passing cowherd helping with the stray beedi or match was probably the culprit. The saving grace being that no one was hurt.
